Earlier this week, a rumor suggested that the next PS5 was more powerful than Microsoft’s Xbox Scarlett console, recently released under the Project Scarlett codename. It was enough to generate a lot of excitement around E3, even if the power of a console seldom correlates with its success. Now an additional source claims that they have heard similar rumors about the power of the PS5 compared to the next Xbox.
According to Colin Moriarty, former editor of IGN, the PS5 is “definitively more powerful” than the Project Scarlett. Moriarty made the statement in his podcast, Sacred Symbols, while talking about the previous rumor of Andrew Reiner of Game Informer.
But unlike Reiner, Moriarty elaborated a bit more saying that this information comes from developers working with the dev kits on both consoles. Apparently, while working with both, developers found the PS5 more powerful.
Of course, the dev kits and the final consoles are not the same, so it is possible that this comparison of information will change. It is also worth mentioning that Moriarty is known to have a stronger relationship with the PlayStation brand than with the Xbox brand and therefore his anecdotal evidence comes largely from sources focused on the PlayStation.
Discussions about the power of these consoles mean that we are in the early days of the console competition. Both Sony and Microsoft recently unveiled their consoles and in the case of the Project Scarlett, we know only a few basic details. During the Xbox E3 2019 Briefing event, for example, Microsoft’s team of developers and hardware talked about the Project Scarlett in terms of its great image qualities, but not its specifications. Sony has been a bit more detailed in its official presentation, but it is not yet ready to give concrete information that indicates the power of PS5.
Ultimately, it’s still over a year before PS5 and Project Scarlett are on the market and a lot can change by then. It does not matter if you’re a fan of one company or another or both, there’s no reason to believe it could break a console. Price, game availability, and social features often determine which console is most attractive, and there is no reason to think that this will change in this next generation.
