PlatinumGames: PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett are Made Up of “Stuff That… Already Exists”
How excited are you with the idea of the upcoming consoles coming from Atsushi Inaba? The head of the software house of PlatinumGames spoke of PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett with VGC during E3, revealing his not exactly enthusiastic point of view. The new platforms, he said, are simply more than the same view of what has already been seen in the current generation.
Now that they will no longer even have the custom chips of the current platforms, according to Inaba, the next platforms will consist of “stuff that… already exists,” which is not wrong, but it simply does not propose anything shocking:
“It’s OK. And by that I mean, I’m sure that things will move faster, graphics will be better and maybe it will be easier with less wait times… that’s good for the consumer. But it’s more of the same, quite frankly, compared to previous generations. It’s nothing that’s disruptive or super innovative, if you ask me,” Inaba said.
“Game hardware used to be about custom chips that you couldn’t do on PCs. Now you look at it and they’re just grabbing stuff that already exists,” he added.
Inaba cites, for example, that Nintendo Switch relies on Tegra, which already existed previously, as well as other consoles rely on technologies already seen on PC. “None of it seems unique to that hardware anymore,” the head of PlatinumGames said.
At this point, Inaba claims to be more intrigued by what cloud-based platforms, such as Google Stadia, will offer with a new approach: “That’s why for me, things like cloud platforms represent innovation and something very, very different – they’re platforms that excite me and where I feel there is a lot more innovation happening.”
