While the creative and production process of the Mortal Kombat movie has taken many years, we currently know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it will be in 2021 when the film premieres on the big screen. This situation has allowed those people linked to the film to reveal more details and recently the person in charge of the script talked about the influence that the Deadpool movie has on the creative process.
During an interview with Comic Book, Greg Russo, the screenwriter of the Mortal Kombat movie, talked about the importance of the story and the characters beyond the controversial and scandalous content that will stand out on screen, which obeys the essence of the franchise.
In that sense, the creative said that the goal is to achieve balance: “We wanted to be somewhat truthful with the tone of the game,” Russo tells us. “So if you played the games, there are real stakes, there’s real emotion behind what the characters are going through but at the same time, it’s really fun. I mean Mortal Kombat’s always been very tongue-in-cheek in how it approaches whether it’s kind of over the top violence or just kind of some of the insane story ideas that they come up with. I mean there’s always been this kind of fun nature to it.”
In that sense, Russo said that the biggest influence they have had to address the tone they want to give the Mortal Kombat movie is in the Deadpool movie: “We looked at the games and then we also were looking at some film comps to compare our tone to. And I think things like Deadpool popped up and we’re like, we really like the tone of that. You know, it’s got some great humor in there, but if you kind of take the humor out of it, it’s got real characters, like really emotional stakes behind what the characters are going through.”
In recent news, it was confirmed that the movie will feature Game-Accurate fatalities. On the other hand, the film will be R-rated in the US.
