CD Projekt Red – the famous development house behind the saga of The Witcher – has received funding of $7 million from the Polish government, aimed at research in the field of multiplayer and the creation of virtual cities.
The Polish government has always been very close to the companies that develop video games, where it is usual to invest in them to promote new technologies and products. In fact, CD Projekt RED received at the time several contributions in the development of their games in the series of The Witcher, for about $30 million. Adam Kicinski, President of CD Projekt RED, has come on the scene to explain how these subsidies work snd why they have received a new contribution from the Polish government:
“Developing videogames is a hyperinnovative activity, but also one which carries substantial financial risks, involves continuous R&D work and requires much experimentation and prototyping along the way. The GameINN program – a fruit of our industry’s collaborative efforts – will, in the coming years, enable Polish developers to carry out nearly 40 projects worth 191 million PLN. I am confident that the resulting innovative solutions will further elevate the quality of Polish videogames and enhance our competitiveness on the global stage. Indeed, our industry now has the potential to become the champion of the modern Polish economy.”
Recall that the same CD Projekt Red persuaded the Polish government to invest on the industry of video games, leading to the creation of a fund reserved for the best software companies in the country (to make matters worse, in Poland the coming of the stamp dedicated to Geralt of Rivia).
According to the official documentation of the financing by $7 million, the Polish government wants to encourage CD Projekt Red to do research on the multiplayer, on the creation of “live” city within the games, the animation and the feeling of cinematic productions. Really great news for the entire game industry.
