Sony responds to claim PS4 used by Paris terrorists to communicate

Following the terrorist attacks in Paris, the PlayStation 4 was propelled into the controversy: its network would have served as means of communication with Islamist groups.

This is Jan Jambon, Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister of Security and Interior in Belgium launched a post: according to him, the PlayStation 4 would have been used as a means of communication by terrorists to prepare the attacks of Paris, because its messages are encrypted.

Quickly, some media show the information even though no strong evidence is presented: the PS4 is then involved in the organization of these attacks and data encryption occurs in the eyes of all as the reason why Intelligence services could not thwart the attacks in time, unable to decipher exchanges.

Faced with the rise of this polemic, Sony has finally officially intervened:

“PlayStation 4 allows for communication amongst friends and fellow gamers and, in common with all modern connected devices, this has the potential to be abused. However, we take our responsibilities to protect our users extremely seriously and we urge our users and partners to report activities that may be offensive, suspicious or illegal. When we identify or are notified of such conduct, we are committed to taking appropriate actions in conjunction with the appropriate authorities and will continue to do so.”

Sony does not deny that some terrorist networks might be operating its machine to take advantage of the encryption exchanges, however the company does not wish to suggest that a certain laxity is required on its platform.

Experts agree that the current video game consoles are actually conducive to such exchanges, especially because they are less monitored with the most popular messaging applications.
