Sony finally decided to reveal more details about the next PlayStation. During a meeting with Wired, Jim Ryan, the executive manager of Sony Interactive Entertainment, confirmed the official name, simply as PlayStation 5, as well as the release date of the next-generation console.
Officially, the next console of Sony will simply be called PlayStation 5. The system will go on sale next year, specifically in late 2020. On the other hand, Mark Cerny, the architect in charge of the console, spoke a little more about various technical aspects of PlayStation 5.
Cerny delved into the points he spoke earlier in March, when the first details of the console were revealed. The architect clarified that the use of ray tracing is related to the graphics processing unit of the console and not to an arrangement at the software level.
On the other hand, Cerny reaffirmed that the loading times will be really short. This will be possible thanks to the SSD of the console and its great efficiency. The solid state drive will make the reading speed dramatically faster than the hard drive of a PlayStation 4.
The architect confirmed that PlayStation 5 will continue to use physical games, which will come on 100 GB optical discs. The reading unit of the console will also work as a 4K Blu-ray player.
The installation of games on PlayStation 5 also promises to be something different. This due to the solid state drive. Thus, the installation process and the data extraction process will be more configurable. Such optimization would allow, for example, only to install a component of the games, such as the campaign or multiplayer.
Sony is working on a renewed user interface, which will offer players more options to interact with other users, such as the ability to see what specific missions they are completing or the games they can join. In the case of single-player games, information about the rewards or missions that can be completed will be displayed.
PlayStation 5 will release at the end of the year 2020.
