Yu Suzuki: Shenmue III Graphics Can’t Be Compared To A Triple-A Title, Will Have 100 Characters

Shenmue III remains a mystery in terms of its development process and its status in view of its alleged launch during the next year 2018. This time a special video interview has been published from the creator studio Ys Net with the director and creator Yu Suzuki by the animation producer Hiroaki Takeuchi on the production of the third installment of the game entitled as ‘Then, Now, and Tomorrow’.

Likewise, the company has also released a Christmas greeting card for all lovers of Suzuki’s work. Without further ado, we leave you with the video interview at the end of this news and the most remarkable details of it below.

During the last years of Shenmue III’s development, Suzuki expresses that: “Using Unreal Engine 4 has been a first for me, but it allowed for more conventional techniques than I expected, which in turn also brought with it completely new efficiencies. The graphics are certainly improved over what I had in mind. While there are of course things that would not compare to a triple-A title, they are better than what I had originally planned for and have started to come into their own.”

Regarding the animations of the protagonists Suzuki is very satisfied: ‘Well, one thing I do feel better about lately is Shenhua. You could say she is my life’s work, and along with her expressions for one, I know I must forever keep on making improvements. It is a work without end. Both Ryo and Shenhua. I think we are now at the point with Shenhua’s model that I can say it finally is something I can approve of. Now it is a matter of getting the expressions and movements right.”

In addition, the Japanese executive has revealed that the third installment will have a large number of characters: “It will go up to around 100 characters. The character design studio Lakshya Digital is working with us now, and we are seeing some really great models. I know these characters will make an impact and leave an impression.”

On the other hand, Suzuki was questioned for the battles system that he wants to do something significantly different: “Well… I want to do something a little different with the battles. When it comes to fighting, there are things that I want to make my own, so I was thinking to do things a bit different from last time. We have been running some tests. It is not a game like Virtua Fighter that is about the timing. So, I hope… it will take the form of a puzzle game that anyone can play, with a strong emphasis on choreography.”

Finally, Suzuki has hinted that in Shenmue 3 we could find different types of QTE compared to previous chapters, with the idea of offering even more varied game situations.

Shenmue III is currently expected for the second half of 2018 on PC and PlayStation 4 (the game will be released in physical and digital format by Deep Silver).
