Ex Devs of Hitman and The Division Create A New Independent Studio To Work on Unannounced “Cult Classic” IP

Sharkmob, a new independent studio formed by former developers of Hitman and The Division has revealed that its first project will be based on “cult classic” game.

“We’re not really interested in making a more traditional single-player type of game,” said Fredrik Rundqvist, former CEO of Massive Entertainment and co-founder of Sharkmob. Alongside this new adventure there will be other former Ubisoft members including Anders Holmquist, The Division’s technical director, Martin Hultberg, IP director of The Division, the producer and technical director Petter Mannerfelt and Rodrigo Cortes, art director of The Division and Hitman.

“What we play privately, the kind of games we love, are very social, very competitive, always multiplayer. The more the merrier. Of course, in our opinion, the pure mechanics of that are not interesting if you don’t have the right IP, the right setting, the right fantasy to get people really excited about the game mechanics we provide. I guess that also gives you a hint as to what kind of game we’re making,” he continued.

Rundqvist also added that the team members have worked together for more than ten years and that their mutual knowledge will be of great help in carrying out the project successfully.

“If you take the five of us, I don’t think it’s exaggerating that the five of us cover a 360 view of everything you need to know to start a company, start a studio, make a game, create an IP, be sure about technology, art direction, game direction, all that stuff,” Rundqvist concluded.

Sharkmob plans to launch a multiplayer PC game with the intention of also taking it out on consoles. Not much is known about this project developed in secret except that it is based on a “cult classic” and they are planning to turn it into a saga.
