Fumito Ueda is interested in Virtual Reality
Fumito Ueda, director best known for his work in ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian, is interested in virtual reality; However, the director acknowledged that there are several obstacles that could prevent him from working with this type of technology.
Fumito Ueda revealed in an interview that he is interested in virtual reality, but stressed that he still does not have the confidence to start a project of this type.
In a recent interview with Glixel in which he spoke on various topics, Ueda said he would like to create something for virtual reality as a creative medium. The problem is that as a head of GenDESIGN, his new independent studio, he needs to make sure that his projects are viable in a market that he believes is still “not very big.”
“On one side, as a creative medium, I’m interested in creating something for VR, but I also have the responsibility to make sure that it makes business sense for us to take on the project. So, in that sense, I haven’t found the right balance or realistic solution to make it happen,” he said.
Ueda said that he does not have the confidence to do a project like Shadow of The Colossus in VR as it would have to be something “that goes beyond the expectations of the fans.” Also, the creative behind The Last Guardian said he would like to have a game that offered more than being in front of the feet of a colossus.
“If I were to release Shadow Of The Colossus for PSVR, I would feel a responsibility to create something that goes beyond the expectations of the fan base. It wouldn’t be enough to just make a game where you’re standing at the feet of a colossus. My biggest concern for a Shadow VR game is that it would be a first-person perspective and the biggest problem with VR, I’ve heard, seems to be that the motion makes people feel sick. So I don’t know if it would really be a good match. I don’t have the confidence that we’d be able to overcome that problem,” finished Ueda.
In related information, Ueda said that games are the means by which he manages to express his art. On the other hand, the creative explained the relationship between their last 2 games. Also, after a long wait, The Last Guardian finally reached PlayStation 4 in early December.
