Digital Foundry: DOOM on PS4 Pro Achieves Maximum 1440p, Native 4K on Xbox One X
Last week, Bethesda released the update for DOOM that adds 4K support for the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro versions. But how exactly does this update work? Let’s find out thanks to the technical analysis of Digital Foundry.
The guys at Digital Foundry have published an interesting video analysis relative to the changes made by the latest patch released by id Software for DOOM that introduced support for a 4K resolution on PlayStation Pro 4 and Xbox One X.
According to the test performed by Digital Foundry, the 4K patch actually improves the graphics of the game on the Mid-Gen platforms but worsens the overall performance: in the most exciting situations the framerate drops even 10fps on both platforms, moreover, there are more graphics artifacts or less annoying issues.
On the resolution front, with the update in question, DOOM can reach 2160p on Xbox One X and 1440p on PlayStation 4 Pro, although in most cases the values are actually lower, a sign of the graphics engine perhaps not too optimized for these resolutions.
From the video, which you can see at the bottom of this news, we note that the shooter has a dynamic resolution that reaches up to native 4K (2160p) on Xbox One X, while on PS4 Pro it stops at 1440p. However, it is pointed out that the frame rate does not always prove permanently anchored to 60 fps but there are some slowdowns during the most intense fights.
Recall that the title is also available for Windows PC and Nintendo Switch.
