CD Projekt Red surprised at the success of The Witcher 3
With The Witcher 3, the team at CD Projekt Red has struck a blow in the middle of the western RPG. Welcomed as one of the best games of the decade by a unanimous press, the new adventures of Geralt of Rivia were a resounding success. Even so resounding that the developers say they are surprised today.
It must be said that the RPG remains a kind often reserved for players ready to swallow long dialogues and spend many hours wandering through it, here and there. This is one reason for the astonishment of CD Projekt Red, The Witcher 3 exceeded the simple framework of the community of fans of RPGs. Jose Teixeria, artist on the title, spoke to Gamespot:
“We are still amazed at how many people played The Witcher 3, because it’s a game style that is usually reserved for hardcore audiences. People actually loved it, especially more in the casual audience, which we’re really impressed with.”
Even more important for the Polish studio, their newest game served as a reminder to the world that it is not necessary to propose multiplayer or costumes sold by the piece to be successful. Note that if the development of The Witcher 3 cost the tidy sum of $81 million dollars, it was only to bring more in just two weeks, according to Gamasutra.
“If anything, The Witcher 3 proved the point that players are more interested in longer games. Now, especially, you hear so many people talking about how the AAA games industry is there and nobody wants that experience anymore, and here you go–a nice, well-written single-player experience. There’s no multiplayer, there’s no microtransactions; you get a game, you play the game and enjoy the game, and it’s a great success.”
A triumph that will allow CD Projekt Red to provide a second extension for The Witcher 3 in the first half of 2016. As for the future of the series, it will probably have to wait a bit since the developers are working currently on an otherwise, Cyberpunk 2077 game. This futuristic RPG which we have today with no in-game image should be more “impressive” like the latest adventures of Geralt of Rivia according to the statements of the studio.
