There is good news for Overwatch players who have just arrived to the game and for those who are hooked since its launch, as Blizzard Entertainment revealed that there are no plans to release Overwatch 2 to this shooter.
Currently, the companies operate their franchises released annual games, but it seems that Blizzard is on a different side. During an interview with GameSpot, senior producer Matthew Hawley and assistant game director Aaron Keller said the studio has no plans to launch Overwatch 2, preferring to focus on growing the current title with new content.
“We’ve had a wildly successful 6v6 shooter game which has blown us away with how the community has responded to it,” Hawley said. “We dip our toes into different areas here and there with the Archives event and Junkenstein. But I think our focus is really on keeping the community engaged with the 6v6 shooter that we have on the live service.”
For his part, Keller said that maintaining Overwatch’s online services requires a lot of work and at the moment it is the only commitment. He explained that, currently, the development team is bigger than it was when they launched the game, as they work to hold events like Anniversary, create maps and develop new heroes.
“What people might not realise is the team now is significantly bigger than what it was when we shipped the game, and we have put all of that into working on the live game and the new maps, heroes, and events like Anniversary,” said Keller. “At least for the time being, [supporting Overwatch] is our focus right now, and we’re excited to work on this game.”
Currently, the Overwatch Anniversary event is being held, where players can participate in activities from past seasons and get all the skins released so far. Blizzard also released a new version called Overwatch Legendary Edition, which supersedes the Game of the Year Edition that was released last year. Also, it is possible to try Overwatch for free on Xbox One, PlayStation and PC until Monday, May 28.
