Phil Spencer Explains that Microsoft’s Success Doesn’t Mean “Pulling Down” Sony

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, explained in a video to Fortune Magazine that he is in favor of collaborating with the competition instead of betting on a more direct confrontation, as desired in the “console war”.

For Phil Spencer, the video game sector is a constantly growing industry; but he does not believe that the path of success is based on stepping on direct competitors. Asked if consumer reactions to competition affect Microsoft’s decisions, Spencer replies that “I’m always listening to the community, but the people who want to see others fail in order for the green team to succeed- that’s not me. There were people, when the Sony deal was announced, I could see it online, ‘what are you doing helping them out?’”

“And it’s like, we’ve had years and years of a relationship with Sony. Sony shipped PCs and they had Windows on it, they use our development tools to bring games. This idea that the only way for any of us to succeed is by pulling down someone else just isn’t the way that the industry works today. It just isn’t.”

Spencer also recalled that by owning Mojang, developer of Minecraft, “We’re one of the biggest publishers on PlayStation. We ship Minecraft there. We have a great business on Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.”

The future of Xbox is called Project Scarlett, the successor to Xbox One. This console will be launched at the end of 2020 with Halo: Infinite simultaneously, as confirmed in the last E3 2019 held in Los Angeles. Check the full interview below.
