In an interview with the Red Bull, Hideo Kojima has revealed more information about the production of Death Stranding, including the photorealistic graphics seen in the trailer released at The Game Awards that were rendered in real time on the PS4 Pro. The developer also said that appearance of the game should be even better afer the launch of the game, which should happen in 2018.
The game uses the Decima engine, same graphics engine used in Death Stranding. “Horizon: Zero Dawn has this fantastic artistic vision, but we’re more aiming for a very photorealistic style,” Kojima said in the interview. Del Toro is actively participating in production.
The developer also revealed details of the plot of the game, including that Guillermo Del Toro is actively participating in the production of Death Stranding. Along with Mads Mikkelsen, the iconic director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” appeared in the last trailer of the game. According to Kojima, the two are in a “deep collaboration” to build the character of Del Toro.
“We worked on a different project together [the cancelled Silent Hill reboot] and he was pretty sad that it ended. So I asked him whether he want to come on board, and now we’re actually collaborating on a deep level because we’re developing his character together and talk a ton about ideas and inspirations, camera angles and storytelling.”
In relation to the script, Kojima also confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen will be the main villain of the plot, that also has Norman Reedus in the cast. In addition, the developer commented on the female protagonist that has not yet been revealed, but possibly will be interpreted by a famous actress. “It’s too early to talk about the broader details of the story or to reveal the female lead, but we have a core structure already,” Kojima said.
Even without an official release date, Death Stranding will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro.
