This weekend there were several shootings in various cities in the United States. Faced with the unfortunate events, Kevin McCarthy, leader of the Minority of the United States House of Representatives, blamed video games for the crimes, because he said they dehumanize people.
However, this position is not convincing, as it does not recognize the real source of the problem. McCarthy’s opinion has upset some US Congresswoman, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who lashed out at McCarthy.
The Congresswoman said that video games do not cause mass shootings, because the real problem is white supremacy and hate speech that exists. From her Twitter account, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lamented the fact that Republicans cannot recognize something that is apparent to most.
“Video games aren’t causing mass shootings, white supremacy is. Sadly the GOP refuse to acknowledge that, bc their strategy relies on rallying a white supremacist base. That‘s why the President hosts stadiums of people chanting “send her back”& targets Congress-members of color,” wrote the congresswoman. She also took the opportunity to attack certain practices of Donald Trump, the current president of the United States, that incites discrimination and relies on hate speech.
Thus, Ocasio-Cortez invited to recognize that the problem is not video games, which are used to divert attention from the true reason for the crimes. What do you think about her statements? Tell us in the comments below.
